The dimensions of the mattress and its expensive filler are the main problems during transportation, because in no case should you get dirty, accidentally wet, or damage the mattress – otherwise it will simply cease to be so elastic and comfortable. In addition, the mattress will need to be dragged to the car, but it is better to take it on a trolley. What if there are multiple mattresses?

In what cases is it necessary to transport a mattress
Buying a mattress is an investment not just in good sleep, but in your overall quality of life and health. Proper sleep affects everything: mood during the day, performance, and, of course, your back – it hurts less, and you feel in good shape. Therefore, first of all, the transportation of a mattress is needed if you do not get enough sleep all the time! And if without jokes, then in the following cases:
- Moving to a new apartment;
- Buying a new mattress
- Or purchasing “with hands” via the Internet;
- Temporary, but at the same time quite a long change of residence – for example, a long business trip or study;
- Suburban moving;
- When you need to give an old mattress to relatives or friends.
Types of modern mattresses and their design features
Modern mattresses are divided into 2 types: orthopedic and anatomical. And according to the level of rigidity, products are divided into 3 main categories:
- Soft – the softness of the mattress is determined by the thickness of the filler and the presence (absence) of springs.
- Medium hard. Such mattresses are made from elastic and rigid components (for example, latex + coconut).
- Rigid – these mattresses use a combination of reinforced springs with a layer of filler of natural origin – coconut coir, linen fibers.
According to the type of construction, mattresses are divided into spring and springless.
Spring models are equipped with dependent or independent springs. Dependent spring elements are intertwined in a certain way, and mattresses with independent blocks are more comfortable since isolated springs more accurately repeat the shape of the human body.
What is special about springless mattresses? Some can be twisted, while others cannot. The advantages of a roll-up mattress: it is convenient to transport and can be stored compactly. It can also be vacuum-packed and after 2-4 hours the unpacked product will take the correct shape.
Springless mattresses also include water and air mattresses, but their preparation for transportation comes down to the fact that the mattress must be blown off and properly folded into a box.
The technology for the production of mattresses in rolls is something like this:
- A special press compresses the mattress under high pressure, reducing its thickness by several times;
- So that the mattress does not spontaneously restore its previous appearance, it is placed in a plastic bag, and the air is pumped out and sealed;
- The mattress is twisted into a tight roll and then wrapped with polyethylene, which plays the role of a fixing layer.
As a result, it is more convenient for the store to sell a compact roll with a diameter of up to 50 cm and a weight of up to 50 kg, which you can independently pick up from the store and bring to your home. Also, if you are doing repairs and at the same time starting to pick up new furniture, then it will be convenient to store such a mattress – after all, when unpacked, it takes up almost no space.
Is it possible to independently fold and twist mattresses for transportation?
We will analyze this issue for 4 types of mattresses: foam, spring, polyurethane foam, and coconut.
❌ Foam mattresses. Such a mattress, rolled into a compact roll at the factory, is very convenient to transport on your own in a car, but it is extremely difficult to roll it up again. The fact is that in production, special vacuum equipment is used for twisting, which removes excess air and seals the product into a tight bag. You can roll up a foam mattress yourself only if its thickness is not more than 8 cm.
✅ Spring mattresses. Such a mattress can be rolled up for a short time if the spring block is not thicker than 15 centimeters. Unfortunately, in this case, too, there is a risk that the spring may jump out and tear the filler or skin.
✅Latex and polyurethane foam (PPU) mattresses. They can be rolled up without a doubt. However, manufacturers recommend storing the mattress rolled up for no longer than a month. Polyurethane foam is a flexible and elastic material, artificial latex is characterized by flexibility and the ability to restore its shape, Foam foam is a filler designed for products that are resistant to torsion. All mattresses made from these materials can be rolled up by the user without fear, they will restore their shape and will not change their original technical characteristics.
❌ Coconut mattresses. It is strictly forbidden to twist products filled with coconut coir – the material is easily deformed, and as a result, the mattress will quickly become unusable.
How to properly pack a mattress for shipping
The best packaging option is vacuum packaging. By tightly wrapping the mattress with a film, you protect it from moisture, dust, and dirt. At the same time, such packaging allows you to safely store the mattress after moving for as long as you need – unfold it when you need it. Remember that when opening a vacuum package, there is a high probability of damaging the mattress itself with a knife or scissors, be careful.
What transport is needed to transport the mattress
The ideal transport is one in which you have to make a minimum of effort and certainly do not have to buy additional mounts. Such transport will serve as a large truck for crossings.
Can a car be used? Yes. But you need to remember that it’s worth transporting a mattress in the trunk only if the twisting method is suitable for your type of mattress, and the mattress itself is no more than a meter wide (otherwise it simply won’t fit, and you can’t fold it across).
Is it possible to transport a mattress on the roof of a car? Carrying a mattress on the roof of a car is a very difficult and risky idea because if the dimensions of the mattress exceed the width of the car, you can get a fine. Also, the mattress can get loose and fly into the windshield of other road users, and it can also play the “sail” effect and the car will simply skid. If you decide to transport the mattress on the roof, use strong straps with secure latches, such as a tow rope or a ratchet tie-down strap.
